K Anyone like Pain of Salvation? These guys sound almost
exactly like the fantastic Swedish band. In fact - Mindflow's
vocalist, Benilo Herbert, may actually be Daniel Gildenlow
in disguise as I cannot really tell them apart. Mind Over
Body is Mindflow's second release - and at 79 minutes, it
is packed full of constantly changing, very long, keyboard
heavy prog metal. This is not your Dream Theater-style, however,
as it is modeled largely after earlier Pain of Salvation (Entropia,
Concrete Lake, Perfect Element).
I happen to love Pain of Salvation, so for me, sounding
like them is a good thing. For those of you who like the band,
pick this up ASAP. That is, of course, unless you are one
of those people who can't stand it when a band sounds like
another band. To me - if it is good - who cares? Anyway -
these guys have more emphasis on piano and also do not ever
(usually) follow any particular format in their songs - another
trait I really like. These guys can get technical when they
want to, but not mind-numbingly so (although they frequently
demonstrate that they can each play their respective instruments
quite capably). There are plenty of great softer moments also
where the vocals really take on a POS feel - strings, piano,
and all. Most of the time, though, the guitars take on a metal
feel.
Occasionally the melodies are not all that great, and
the production seems slightly muddy to me, but maybe I need
to give it a listen on headphones. There is a whole lot to
digest here - this album takes some time. Highly recommended
prog metal. Rating: 4 stars
