The Review

Continuing his love and mixture of renaissance music with more contemporary strands of music pays off in the sixth album from former Deep Purple/Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night. A marvelous album that doesn’t strain in connecting two very different worlds of music, “The Village Lanterne” is Blackmore’s Night’s most accomplished album to date. Blackmore even ventures into the past and reinvents one Deep Purple classic and one Rainbow classic—“Child in Time” is paired up with the new “Mond Tanz” while “Street of Dreams” is pulled from Rainbow’s 1983 “Bend Out of Shape”. Both are reinvented for this fine album giving Blackmore a chance to look back without reliving past glories. The opening track “25 Years” opens the album with a powerful acoustic track driven by Night’s ethereal vocals. Between that track and the concluding “Street of Dreams” Blackmore’s Night continues to plow fertile fields of music. You can’t call Ritchie Blackmore a has been nor can you accuse him to resting on his laurels and his muse continues to be as restless as his spidery fingers that run up and down the neck of his guitar.

Highly recommended.
